“Mixing Love and Business”

24 February, 2010
By: David Haglund

The Rowley family in Cedar Hills is coping with a rather unusual string of bad health luck: all of their children are fighting Crohn’s disease, asthma and/or cancer. One family. Three children. Three major health, surgery and treatment issues. But disease is not what defines them – they are a very happy family and they pursue happiness in all the usual ways.

Mary Hegerman, their neighbor, admires their strength and positive attitude – she notes that Mr. Rowley loves to say with a smile, “Another day in paradise.” Mary says she is inspired by their response to all of the “curve balls” that have been thrown in their direction.

UTAH Wood & Iron is a new company in Orem, Utah, and is run by Marshall Haglund and Jeff Owens (whose contribution to the manufacturing world is their one-stop shop for wood and metal fabrication, finishing and powder coating). They built a giant (36” tall) letter “H” for the Home and Garden Show last spring as a novel way to showcase some of their capabilities, and Marshall’s mother thought it would make a delightful gift as a “Love Letter.”

This past January, they advertised to the readers of their web site and blog that they would accept nominations for a deserving recipient of a “Love Letter” to be manufactured and delivered on Valentine’s Day. As you may have intuited by this point, Mary nominated the Rowley family, and their “Love Letter” – an “R” – was placed in their living room on a night this week when they were home (instead of at the hospital).

Mary’s Nomination:

“I would like to nominate a family who is going thru a hard trial in their life, but always have a positive attitude and is so strong as a family. Their 11 year old daughter Desmon was diagnosed a couple years ago with Chrones disease. She has struggled for many years. Last year they needed to do surgery and she almost died. This little girl has gone thru so much, it’s hard to imagine the pain she has had to endure. After recovering from the surgery they thought things were getting better. Another curve ball was thrown at them. She was diagnosed with Leukemia. Her doctors can’t even find another person in the country who has both diseases and so young. On December 29 they started her first round of Chemo. After living with chemo and living up at primary children’s hospital…another curve ball… They found out their 13 year old son has Chrones disease also.. He had a 1% chance of getting it and of course he did! Even though all of these bad things have happened to this family, they are still keeping a positive attitude. Their Dad loves to say with a smile “Another day in paradise”

I think this family is a wonderful example of sticking together!”

Thanks again

Mary Hegerman

Two main factors can be attributed to this achievement. First our willingness and desire to work with products or materials that others may overlook. And, second, our industry leading powder coating process.

From the article Second Nature:

[]Owner Marshall Haglund says. “Reusing materials that have come to the end of their intended use is the most environmentally friendly way to recycle. Plus, the low cost of these ‘used’ materials is an important economic factor in our business model.”

From Utah Powder Coatings.com:

The process we use is eco-friendly – the powdered pigment is melted on to the surface of the metal, instead of being painted on using liquids that give off volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). Our chemical pre-treatments are dilute acids and alkalis that, at the end of the process, combine to form a pH-neutral water effluent that flows down regular sewer lines. The powder is filtered through a three stage filter in our Spray Systems ™ booth, which recycles the filtered air to our shop. And our top-of-the-line oven is so well-insulated that the walls remain cool to the touch even at the peak temperature of the curing cycle.
